Zithromax z-Pack

  • Generic name: Azithromycin
  • Brand names: Zithromax, Z-pak, Zmax, Tri-Pak, Sumamed
  • Therapeutic class: Azalide antibiotic (subclass of macrolides)

What is Zithromax Z-Pak used for?

  • Respiratory tract infections: tonsillitis (strep throat), bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, pertussis (whooping cough), otitis media (middle ear infection).
  • STD: chlamydia, chancroid, gonorrhea, syphilis (primary, secondary, or early latent).
  • Travelers’ diarrhea, shigellosis, salmonella.
  • Dental infections (tooth abscess).

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any macrolide.

Drug interactions

Azithromycin does not affect CYP isoenzymes. There is no evidence that azithromycin, unlike most other macrolides, interacts with any agents to produce clinically significant adverse effects3.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Z-pack?

Alcohol does NOT interact with azithromycin1. As mentioned above, azithromycin has a very low potential for interactions. Although doctors do not advise mixing antibiotics with alcohol, azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-pak) will be effective, despite the alcohol consumption.

Z-pack during pregnancy and breast feeding

Pregnancy category: B.

Generally, azithromycin is safe during pregnancy4. It is suitable for the treatment of urogenital infections such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea in pregnant women.

Azithromycin is safe to use while breast feeding.

Precautions

Don't purchase Z-Pack antibiotics for non-bacterial infection or mild ailment. Misuse of antibiotics, particularly broad-spectrum such as macrolides, adds to the global risk of increased spread of bacterial resistance 2.
